FRIDAY'S HEADLINES
BARNSLEY CHRONICLE
BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey is hopeful that he will have three or four new signings in his squad for the first game of the new season at QPR. Davey is in bullish mood - despite the Oakwell men being handed a tough-looking first month of fixtures for the 2008-2009 campaign.
It is the first time in four years that Barnsley have been given an away fixture on the opening day. Indeed, the Championship planners have pitted the Reds against the top three promotion favourites (QPR, Birmingham and Derby County) in the opening four weeks.
The other match scheduled for August is against a side (Coventry City) who scored eight goals in just two matches against Davey's men last term! Despite the fact that Barnsley have not won at Loftus Road in almost 60 years - and have lost their last three outings there - Davey is undeterred.
