BARNSLEY 4 (Foster 54, Campbell-Ryce 61, Macken 74, Hume 86)
DONCASTER ROVERS 1 (Stock 11 P)

TEN man Barnsley showed their character to bounce back and blow away Doncaster with a breathtaking second half display at Oakwell.

Reds boss Simon Davey made just one change following the defeat at Ipswich Town with Maceo Rigters coming into a goal-shy starting eleven at the expense of Jon Macken. Youngster Reuben Noble-Lazarus was on the bench after a memorable week for the 15-year-old starlet.

Rigters almost made an instant impact on his full home debut as he picked out a great pass to send Iain Hume through on goal on six minutes. Hume just went a little wide and could only bring a fine save from Neil Sullivan. Seconds later Martin Devaney got in at the back post to reach Rob Kozluk's cross but looked to find Diego Leon in the middle when he could have lashed a volley goalward.

Rovers had the ball in the back of the net on eight minutes when James Coppinger knocked a cross over for Lewis Guy to rifle home but the striker was denied by the linesman's flag.

Doncaster were given a harsh penalty on eleven minutes when Martin Woods crossed from the left following a smart move through the middle of the Reds defence. Woods' cross beat everybody although Guy ended up on flat his back and referee Steve Tanner pointed to the spot after adjudging that the striker had been pushed. Stock beat Heinz Muller from 12 yards.

Dennis Souza let his frustration get the better of him on 20 minutes after bouncing the ball into the turf after a free kick went against the Brazilian on half way.

It was scrappy with neither side getting a foothold in the battle although Leon flashed one wide of the mark on the half hour after Hume had been flattened in the middle of the park. Woods then managed to get a shot away from 20 yards two minutes later but Muller was in the right place to punch the ball clear. Muller again had to get his angles right from Stock's corner after Matthew Mills had put a header on target from 12 yards.

Barnsley threatened again on 34 minutes after Anderson and Devaney had fed Kozluk on the edge of the area but Sullivan was quickly down to turn his low shot wide.

The Reds went close on 36 minutes when Jamal Campbell-Ryce broke well on the counter and gave Rigters a chance on the edge of the area and the Dutchman beat Sullivan but his low shot drifted wide of the far post. Rovers had Sullivan to thank again on 38 minutes when the veteran managed to claw Souza's header around the post. Anderson then hammered one high and wide on 40 minutes after breaking through the middle of the park but his 40-yarder was never going to trouble Sullivan.

Rovers were on the front foot from the start of the second half and the Reds had to thank Souza on 47 minutes when he put his giant frame between Coppinger's shot and the goal.

Muller almost had another moment to forget on 48 minutes when he spilled Stock's low drive but the big German recovered magnificently to deny Guy on the follow up.

Barnsley's afternoon went from bad to worse on 49 minutes when Guy beat Darren Moore to a ball forward and raced in on goal only to take a tumble under the defenders' challenge. Referee Tanner showed no hesitation in showing Moore a straight red card and giving the Reds a mountain to climb.

The Reds battled back in the face of adversity on 54 minutes when Souza beat the Rovers defence to get to Kozluk's free kick. Stephen Foster reacted quickest in the area and planted a header past Sullivan and into the back of the net.

Rovers almost snatched the lead again seconds later when Stock's free kick drifted past everybody but Souza managed to nod the ball past the far post and out for a corner.

Barnsley should have had a penalty on 59 minutes when Foster went for Leon's free kick only to be barged away from the ball by Gareth Roberts. It was an almost identical incident that saw Rovers take the lead from the spot in the first half but this time the referee waved away the Reds' vociferous appeals.

The second goal came on 61 minutes following great work down the left flank by Campbell-Ryce. The winger bamboozled three Rovers defenders before curling a fantastic low shot past Sullivan and into the far corner.

Souza was leading by example at the heart of the Reds defence as he again put his head in where it hurts on 65 minutes to deflect Stock's drive away from goal.

Campbell-Ryce almost created a third for the Reds on 72 minutes when he found Rigters in space in the area but the Dutchman blazed wide from 12 yards. It was Rigters' last action of the game as he made way for Macken just seconds later.

Macken made an instant impact on the game just two minutes after coming on from the bench when he was in the right place at the right time after Sullivan had made a mess of Devaney's fine strike. The ball fell nicely for Macken and the striker made no mistake rifling a shot into the back of the net from close range.

The confidence suddenly was back with the Reds and Campbell-Ryce was a foot or so away from a 35 yard stunner after letting fly but his effort fizzed just over the top.

Rovers were rattled but when they did threaten, as they did through Coppinger on 80 minutes, they found Muller in fine form as the German parried his effort to safety.

The ten men made Rovers look daft again on 83 minutes when Hume picked a fine pass through the Doncaster defence to send Kozluk in on goal but his effort flew high over the bar after making a gut-busting 50 yard run.

It was all so easy against a dispirited and demoralised Doncaster on 86 minutes when Anderson fed Hume 30 yards out and the striker curled a wonderful shot past Sullivan to make it a fabulous four for Barnsley.

It was Hume's last action as he was replaced by Noble-Lazarus on 88 minutes. It was the youngsters home debut in front of a delirious Oakwell.

Rovers had one final chance in stoppage time as Coppinger found Darren Byfield but again Muller made it look easy in the Reds goal. The German also managed to get up quickly to smother Coppinger's shot on the rebound.
