BARNSLEY 2 (Williams OG 45, Odejayi 65)
SCUNTHORPE UNITED 0
BARNSLEY battled hard and in the end were probably good value for the win after Kayode Odejayi's fine second half strike lit up Oakwell.
Reds manager Simon Davey made two changes to the side that slipped to defeat at West Brom with a debut for Jamal Campbell-Ryce and a start for Grant McCann at the expense of Lewin Nyatanga and Andy Johnson. Scunthorpe included former Red Paul Hayes in their starting eleven.
It was the visitors who fired the first shot in anger on five minutes as the ball broke to Ian Baraclough on the edge of the area. The midfielder hit his effort first time but saw the ball loop high over Heinz Muller's goal.
The best the Reds could muster in a scrappy opening came on 12 minutes when Brian Howard let fly from 25 yards but his effort flew well wide of the target. Barnsley almost got it together a minute later as Campbell-Ryce, Anderson De Silva and McCann combined well to free Dominik Werling on the left but the full back's cross was an inch too high Odejayi in the centre.
Odejayi then did well on 17 minutes to knock the ball down to Istvan Ferenczi but the big Hungarian could not get his shot on target from 20 yards. Werling then tried his luck from distance on 22 minutes but his well-struck shot hit Jim Goodwin and bounced clear.
The Reds were almost undone on 24 minutes as Hayes let fly from Kevan Hurst's corner but Ferenczi was in the right place to make a fine block.
Werling then let fly again three minutes later after Andy Crosby had cynically hacked at Odejayi but again the full back found his route to goal well blocked by the Scunthorpe defence.
The best chance of the opening half hour fell to Martin Paterson, who raced onto De Silva's slip before forcing Muller into a fine low save.
Odejayi almost broke the deadlock on 35 minutes as he found himself behind the Scunthorpe defence as he raced onto De Silva's cross but Marcus Williams somehow managed to get a fine tackle in to deny the frontman a goal.
Barnsley got a bizarre opening goal on 43 minutes after Crosby hammered his clearance against Williams under pressure from Campbell-Ryce. The ball looped backwards and over Joe Murphy, who could only watch as it landed in the back of the net.
Campbell-Ryce then forced Murphy into his first real save in stoppage time as he let fly from 25 yards but the Scunthorpe keeper was quickly down to smother the ball.
The Reds were almost further in front on 54 minutes as De Silva's fine free kick caught out the Scunthorpe defence and Ferenczi managed to get his head to the ball only to see it bounce back off the underside of the bar. Werling then brought a save from Murphy a minute later with a shot from distance.
De Silva picked up the first caution of the game on 62 minutes after he reacted after Andy Butler shoved his face into his with a push on the Scunthorpe defender. Butler got off with nothing despite his provocation.
The Reds then gave Matt Sparrow a great chance a minute later as the defence opened wide but the Scunthorpe midfielder blazed his effort weakly over the bar.
Odejayi finally got his first Oakwell goal on 65 minutes as he hammered his way past Crosby before showing great strength and tenacity to race 50 yards with the ball and put his low shot past Murphy.
Howard was next to get in behind the Scunthorpe defence as he raced clear on 69 minutes only to be denied by Kelly Youga's somewhat clumsy challenge. Goodwin was then booked for squaring up to Kim Christensen as the Iron looked for a way back into the game.
Hayes finally got into the game on 79 minutes as he showed great skill to juggle the ball on the edge of the area but his shot was well over the top of Muller's goal. Hayes then got a shot away from the edge of the area two minutes later but again he was nowhere close to troubling Muller.
Substitute Izzy Iriekpen was next to try his luck from distance on 83 minutes as Scunthorpe pressed on but his effort cannoned away off Werling.
Barnsley had chances and Odejayi got in again on 85 minutes but was caught in two minds whether to shoot or pass and in the end gave the ball to the Scunthorpe defence.
Scunthorpe really should have pulled one back on 88 minutes as Hayes' pass sent Jonathan Forte through but the striker could only shoot wide when faced up by Muller. Hayes then brought a save from Muller in stoppage time with a shot from 25 yards.
