BARNSLEY bounced back from Tuesday's derby day disappointment with an outstanding display to earn a share of the spoils at Portman Road.

Reds boss Simon Davey made two changes to the side that slipped up at Hillsborough with Grant McCann and Sam Togwell coming into midfield to replace Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Brian Howard, who sat out the game through suspension.

Stephen Foster was handed the skippers' armband for the first time in his short Oakwell career against an Ipswich side looking for a club record 13th straight home win.

Barnsley started the game well with Jon Macken, Dominik Werling and McCann all putting the home side under pressure early on with decent deliveries from the flanks.

McCann almost put a goal on a plate for Istvan Ferenczi on eight minutes when he swung the ball in from the left but the Hungarian striker just could not direct his header goalward.

Anderson De Silva then had the home defence at sixes and sevens a minute later as he broke well through the middle of the park and gave Togwell a chance but the midfielder saw his shot well blocked away.

Togwell then should have done better two minutes later as he found himself free at the back post after McCann's cross had beat the Ipswich defence. The midfielder was caught in two minds with only Neil Alexander to beat and completely missed his kick from seven yards.

Macken turned provider again on 14 minutes as he managed to give Ferenczi a chance from 18 yards but the striker could only shoot wide of the target.

After a shaky start Ipswich came roaring back into the game with Jon Walters bringing a fine block from Dennis Souza on 17 minutes. Tommy Miller then forced Heinz Muller into an outstanding save two minutes later after good play in the area by Pablo Counago.

Counago then brought a decent stop from the big German on 25 minutes after another quick turn on the edge of the area.

Barnsley responded well and again could have snatched the lead on 27 minutes when Togwell nipped in front of Jason De Vos to meet Werling's cross but could not divert the ball goalward under pressure.

A rare slip by Souza on the byline gave Counago the chance to cross on 27 minutes and Martin Devaney had to be alert to clear the danger before Miller could pounce.

Alexander then had to be at his very, very best on 29 minutes to turn away McCann's fine 30-yarder. The Scot was forced into action again from McCann's corner as Foster managed to get above his marker but found the Town keeper in fine form.

De Silva thought he had broken the deadlock in added time at the end of the first half as he smashed the ball goalward but watched his shot whistle wide of Alexander's upright.

Ipswich came out with the bit between their teeth after the break and could have been in front just two minutes into the second half when Miller broke free in the area. The midfielder was all set to rifle the ball into the net before Werling appeared from nowhere make a wonderful last-gasp challenge.

At the other end Togwell forced Alexander into a decent stop on 53 minutes after turning well past two challenges on the edge of the area. Ferenczi then managed to pick out a pass to find McCann three minutes later but the Irishman could not hit the target from 25 yards.

Miller was causing problems on 59 minutes as he raced into the area onto Counago's flick but Werling was again strong and determined to bundle the ball back to Muller.

The game swung to the other end again and Togwell managed to get past the Ipswich defence on 63 minutes onto Ferenczi's pass but drifted wide and could only shoot at Alexander from a tight angle.

Ipswich had the benefit of the referee's decision on 65 minutes as Togwell was harshly adjudged to have handled. Gavin Williams strode up and arrowed a free kick right into the top corner from 25 yards but Muller somehow managed to claw the ball to safety.

Another Williams free kick caused problems on 66 minutes as the loose ball fell to substitute Danny Haynes but the youngster blazed high over the bar from 18 yards.

Barnsley had the ball in the back of the net on 71 minutes as Ferenczi looked to have beaten the offside trap to meet Macken's flick but his strike was ruled out.

The Reds had to hang on four minutes later as David Wright's cross caused an almighty scramble in the area but somehow the visitors managed to clear.

Werling, who had an outstanding afternoon on the left, brought the very best from Alexander on 79 minutes as he let fly from all of 40 yards but the Town keeper was alert enough to claw the ball wide of the post.

Ipswich then could have won it on 85 minutes when De Vos rose to meet Williams' corner but planted his firm header over the bar.
