BARNSLEY 2 (Nardiello 30, Macken 45)
WEST BROM 1 (Morrison 59)

BARNSLEY laid the ghosts of the Ricoh Arena to rest with an outstanding display to beat the league leaders at Oakwell.

Reds boss Simon Davey made two changes to the side that capitulated at Coventry with Martin Devaney and Rob Kozluk coming into the starting eleven. Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Miguel Tininho missed out although Campbell-Ryce had been in action in Jamaica on Wednesday and Tininho was ineligible under the terms of his loan agreement.

Oakwell showed Wembley Stadium just how to observe a minute's silence prior to kick off as both West Brom supporters and Barnsley fans impeccably fell quiet as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster, including local lads Tommy Taylor and Mark Jones.

Barnsley could have been in front with just two minutes on the clock as De Silva lashed a shot into the area from 18 yards. The ball fell to Jon Macken who managed to knock it back to Daniel Nardiello but his shot cannoned off a post and away to safety with Dean Keily well beaten.

The Reds broke a minute later as Diego Leon found space but his shot flew well over the bar. Barnsley had the West Brom defence at sixes and sevens again on five minutes when Lewin Nyatanga managed to get his head to Brian Howard's free kick. The ball bounced through to Macken but the striker just could not find a finish from eight yards.

Again the Reds put the Baggies under pressure on eight minutes as Kozluk sent a great free kick into the area for Dennis Souza to attack and Keily was nowhere to be seen as the defender's header glanced of a West Brom player and just over the bar. From Howard's corner Nyatanga thought he should have had a penalty as he was dragged all over the place by his marker but the referee gave nothing.

Kozluk went close to the opener on eleven minutes as he cut in from the left hand side before drilling a low shot goalward but Keily was in the right place to make a smart save.

Kozluk was involved again a minute later as he broke onto Howard's pass only to be taken out from behind in the area. Kozluk was left in agony but the referee amazingly waved play on and let West Brom continue to break forward despite the full back laying injured on the pitch.

Nardiello made Bostjan Cesar look silly on 14 minutes as he cut in from the right and drew a ridiculous body check from the West Brom centre half. It gave Howard the chance to test his shooting boots from 22 yards but the midfielder blazed his free kick well over the top.

West Brom were always going to be a threat no matter how much the Reds put them to the sword in the opening stages and Paul Robinson went close with a header from Chris Brunt's corner on 17 minutes but the home defence stood firm.

Barnsley pushed on and again got in behind the Baggies on 18 minutes as Devaney's chip looked to set Nardiello up for a tap in but Cesar managed to get his head to the ball and take it off the striker's foot.

West Brom finally created something on 24 minutes as Filipe Teixeira's corner was scrambled clear only for Robinson to volley four or five yards wide of the target.

Barnsley deservedly in front on the half hour as Nardiello nipped in and raced onto Robinson's woeful back pass. Through one-on-one with Keily there was only ever going to be one outcome and Nardiello coolly rolled the ball into the back of the net.

Another foul by Jonathan Greening gave the Reds a great chance on 38 minutes as he went through Howard from behind. This time it was Leon who tried his luck but his shot flew a yard over the bar.

Barnsley grabbed a fully deserved second goal deep in stoppage time when Howard's free kick caused pandemonium in the West Brom box. The ball fell to Nardiello but the striker saw his shot header somehow off the line. It bounced out to Macken, who managed to find the back of the net from six yards.

West Brom boss Tony Mowbray rang the changes at half time as he looked to get something frmo the game. Roman Bednar and Cesar departed the action and were replaced by Leon Barnett and Craig Beattie.

The changed almost paid immediate dividends as Beattie did well to play in Teixeira on 46 minutes and the midfielder finally forced Tony Warner into a save with a low shot from distance.

Barnett was then involved at the other end a minute later as he managed to clear Devaney's fine cross before Macken could pounce on the six-yard line.

Barnsley should have had third seconds later as Warner did well to catch a West Brom corner and sent Nardiello clean through with a fine throw. Nardiello raced clear but could only hit the sidenetting with Keily to beat.

Warner finally had a decent save to make on 54 minutes as he dove to claw James Morrison's shot out of the corner after West Brom had piled forward. Warner then denied West Brom again a minute later as he did wonderfully well to stop Barnett from slotting a loose ball home from six yards.

Devaney then thought he had won a penalty on 58 minutes as he was tripped in the area by Robinson's outstretched leg. The referee amazingly gave nothing and the home side picked up a free kick after the winger complained.

West Brom pulled one back just a minute later when Kevin Phillips did well to flick the ball to Morrison and the midfielder prodded it past Warner from six yards.

Devaney almost grabbed a third for the Reds just seconds later as he combined well with Macken before drilling the ball goalward only for it to striker Barnett and bounce agonisingly wide.

Howard then thought he had scored on 62 minutes after letting fly from the edge of the area as he took on a dropping ball but Keily threw himself across goal to parry his effort away.

West Brom opened the Reds up again on 67 minutes as Craig Beattie flicked the ball through to Phillips but the striker could only shoot straight at Warner. The Baggies had another clean sight of goal two minutes later as Zoltan Gera broke in behind Kozluk but somehow blazed wide with only Warner to beat.

Barnsley did not roll over and West Brom had to do some serious defending to stay in the game as Macken, Leon and Michael Coulson all put the Baggies under pressure as they searched for a third.

West Brom again almost gifted the Reds a goal on 81 minutes as Coulson charged down another appalling back pass by Robinson but this time Keily was alert enough to clear the ball.

Greening finally picked up a caution his foul-strewn display warranted on 84 minutes after he cynically went through Devaney on the wing.

West Brom were handed a lifeline when the referee decided to play four additional minutes but the Reds, backed by an amazing atmosphere inside Oakwell, held firm.
