LIVERPOOL 1 (Kuyt 32)
BARNSLEY 2 (Foster 57, Howard 90)
BARNSLEY have a new set of Anfield heroes after Brian Howard's last minute winner gave Simon Davey's side a historic win over Liverpool.
Reds boss Simon Davey made three enforced changes to his side for the massive FA Cup Fifth Round clash at Anfield. Luke Steele, Bobby Hassell and Istvan Ferenczi came into the side to replace cup tied trio Tony Warner, Lewin Nyatanga and Jon Macken. Barnsley were backed by 6,000 supporters inside Anfield and around 3,500 more at Oakwell watching the Beam Back.
Liverpool had one eye on Tuesday's Champions League clash with Inter Milan and went into the game with out Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard although the England skipper was on the bench. Kuyt and Peter Crouch led the Liverpool attack, supported by Ryan Babel and Lucas.
Barnsley were straight onto the attack and Martin Devaney sent over a fine cross that caught out the Liverpool defence with just two minutes on the clock. The ball struck Steve Finnan before Ferenczi could pounce and somehow the home side managed to clear under pressure. Daniel Nardiello almost got in seconds later as another Devaney cross beat the Liverpool backline but the striker was denied a shot at goal by the linesmans flag.
At the other end Yossi Benayoun fired well wide of Steele's far post on four minutes after cutting in from the left wing. Xavi Alonso was next to try his luck from the edge of the box as he pounced onto Devaney's clearance but dragged his effort wide. Liverpool were on the attack again on ten minutes after sloppy play by Brian Howard gave Benayoun the chance to break down the right. The Israeli midfielder did well to drag his cross back to Kuyt but the striker could not find a finish from 18 yards.
A great turn by Kuyt split the Reds again on eleven minutes as Liverpool piled forward but again Lucas was unable to finish a flowing move with an end product as he lashed the ball high over the bar. Finnan then teased the Reds defence with a cross towards Crouch on 12 minutes and Souza was not close enough to the England man and he was lucky to see his header fly a foot or so wide.
Barnsley had another let off on 18 minutes after Kuyt had again done well in the area and Rob Kozluk's attempted clearance cannoned off Stephen Foster and just wide of the post. Steele was forced into his first real save seconds later as he turned Crouch's shot around the post.
Barnsley threatened to grab a sensational goal on 20 minutes as Howard's free kick found its way to Foster in the area. The defender nodded the ball back across goal for Souza to attack but his header was kicked away from danger before it could drop over the line.
Nardiello then should have given the Reds the lead on 28 minutes as he managed to rob Sami Hypia before racing in on goal. The striker hit his shot well but Charles Itandje managed to claw it out to safety.
At the other end Steele was performing heroics as he dove full length to get both hands onto Alonso's curler and divert the ball out of the top corner.
Liverpool finally got their goal on 32 minutes after Babel raced past a couple of challenges down the left wing before pulling the ball back to Kuyt. The Dutchman took his time and planted his shot past Steele and into the back of the net.
The goal lifted Liverpool and Alonso went close to a second on 34 minutes as his deflected shot beat Steele but flew a foot or so over the bar. Steele then showed good positioning again on 36 minutes to stop Lucas doubling the lead from distance. Steele was scrambling across his goal again on 41 minutes as Crouch got his head to Babel's cross but the ball flew just wide of the far post.
It should have been two in stoppage time as Crouch managed to get above Hassell to meet Finnan's cross but Steele threw himself across goal to pull off another fine stop.
Liverpool again found a way through the Reds defence on 50 minutes as Babel skipped past Hassell before pulling the ball back but Foster managed to be in the right place to block the loose ball.
The Reds again went close to a goal on 56 minutes when Ferenczi nipped in front of his marker and had a free header from Diego Leon's corner but the Hungarian blazed his effort into the Kop.
Anfield was in total shock a minute later as Devaney swung in a dangerous cross from the right. Foster rose highest against Jamie Carragher and powered a header straight through Itandje into the back of the net.
Barnsley's luck was in seconds after the restart when Benayoun raced through and round Steele but Kozluk somehow managed to get back and hack the ball off the line. Kozluk again reacted quickest as Crouch looked to put the rebound into the empty net.
Alonso picked up a yellow card on 60 minutes before Marciano Van Homoet followed the Spaniad into the book three minutes later after lunging through Benayoun on the touch line.
Hyypia brought another fine save from Steele on 65 minutes as Liverpool piled on the pressure before the defender forced Barnsley's newest hero into an even better stop with a point blank header from Alonso's corner seconds later. Steele again performed heroics on 68 minutes after Benayoun had danced his way into the six yard box and let fly but again the young keeper was more than up to the task.
Itandje almost threw the Reds the lead on 74 minutes as he fumbled Anderson de Silva's 30 yarder but managed to recover his composure enough to grab the loose ball.
Barnsley had a stonewall claim for a penalty waved away on 75 minutes as Itandje took out Kayode Odejayi after the striker knocked the ball past him. The referee amazingly gave nothing even though the replay showed a clear foul on the big striker.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had seen enough and paid the Reds the ultimate compliment on 75 minutes by throwing Gerrard into action in a bid to win the game.
Barnsley went for it and Itandje had to be at his very, very best on 79 minutes with an unorthodox save to turn Howard's thunderbolt away to safety.
Harry Kewell smashed a shot against the outstanding Foster on 82 minutes after good play by Gerrard and pounced on the loose ball but the Aussie could only lash his second attempt high into the Reds supporters. Kewell again managed to find a yard a minute later but this time found Hassell blocking his way to goal.
Kewell again found his shooting boots on 84 minutes as Souza's clearance dropped on the edge of the area but his volley clipped the bar before sailing over.
Liverpool poured forward and Steele was again immense as he turned over Kuyt's shot on 85 minutes before Hassell again made an important block seconds later as Crouch looked to pull the trigger in the six yard box.
Hassell, who was absolutely outstanding throughout, was in the right place on 86 minutes as the ball fell to Kuyt just yards from goal and this time the full back lashed it over the top to safety.
At the other end Itandje almost made a mess of Jamal Campbell-Ryce's shot as the keeper juggled the ball on his six-yard line but grabbed it before Howard could pounce.
Odejayi had the Liverpool defence scrambling again on 89 minutes as he barged his way past three challenges before finding Devaney and the winger sensed glory but his shot flew a foot wide of the post.
At the other end Gerrard had a great chance to win it in stoppage time but put his shot high over from 18 yards. Kewell then brought another wonderful save from Steele seconds later.
The game turned on its head on 93 minutes after Howard was brought down in the area by Alonso only for the referee to wave away his protests. The midfielder was rightly riled and Howard made history for the Reds with the last kick of the game as he danced his way into the area before planting an unstoppable shot past Itandje to send Barnsley into the Quarter Finals.
