VICTORY AT ANFIELD EARNS TYKES THE AWARD
THE League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the F&C Investments Performance of the Week Award should go to Barnsley following their shock 2-1 win at Anfield against Liverpool in the 5th Round of the FA Cup on Saturday 16th February 2008.
Manager Simon Davey will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to be screened on Sky Soccer Saturday on 23rd February 2008.
Barnsley sent Liverpool crashing out of the FA Cup thanks to Brian Howard's dramatic injury-time winner at Anfield.
Ryan Babel set up Dirk Kuyt to put the Reds ahead just after the half hour and only some super saves by Luke Steele kept Barnsley in the game.
The Tykes levelled when Stephen Foster headed home Martin Devaney's cross, twelve minutes into the second half and, although Liverpool poured forward, they could not beat Steele on his debut.
Harry Kewell hit the bar for the home side before Howard's low shot into the bottom corner won it for Barnsley.
Barnsley manager Simon Davey was jubilant after Brian Howard's last-gasp winner gave his side their famous FA Cup victory.
Davey said: "It's a fairytale, it's what dreams are made of - he has scored the winner in a Cup tie at the Kop end.
"Credit to the players, they've been fantastic from the first minute and now they have got their reward.
"Our goalkeeper Luke Steele has come to Anfield for his debut and pulled off some world-class saves."
